Help in North Wales??? Mair (10 Oct 2005 10:28) My nephew, Ray, is 23 and has AS. His symptoms include severe depression bordering on suicidal, sometimes extreme temper tantrums, severe inability to socialise (he can't go out in public when there are young people around, for example), and extreme sensitivity to noise, which changes from day to day - car horns one day, dogs barking the next.
It is heartbreaking to see him live what he calls a 'useless life' and he can't understand the point of being born.
So far, in North Wales, the help he has received has been poor to non-existent. He has had drugs thrown at him, spells in a centre for mentally ill (with adults of all ages and illnesses ranging from severe depression to schizophrenia). He has not been offered any counselling, alternative therapy (such as music therapy and he absolutely loves music) and little or no support has been available to hs mum and grandmother who have themselves become depressed.
Ray is a wonderful human being with enormous amounts of love, kindness and intelligence. I really feel that in the right climate, with supportive, caring adults who can help him deal with his symptoms in different ways, his life would change and he would experience a quality of life that has hitherto been unknown to him.
Please can anyone help or advise???
Mair

Emma Brindley (28 Jan 2007 19:22) Hi Mair, I've just come across this website and read a message that you posted some time ago. I was wondering how things are with your nephew now? I'm currently doing a masters in Applied Behaviour Analysis at Bangor University. I have 7 years experience in autism, but it is with children. However, two other students work in a residential setting for young people with autism which is run by one of the lecturers who also is clinically qualified. It uses the methods of ABA and sounds very positive. Emma Brindley

Help in North Wales - thanks Emma and Rhian Mair Morgan (14 Mar 2007 8:19) Thank you both for your messages. I wonder whether you could email me directly on the address above so that I can give you an update? I know you can't help directly but sometimes it's just good to get things written down!
Ray has been having a hard time of it lately and it's so frustrating that he can't attend the one self-group that we are aware of because of his inability to cope with others. Ideally we'd love a one-to-one contact for him - someone who understands AS and has lots of patience. He has had one-to-one workers in the past but they have very little understanding of his 'symptoms' and after a while get bored of working with him and just stop, with no thought of managing the ending of the relationship.
Anyway, that's enough from me for now...
Best wishes and thanks again Mair

Not entirely sure how this site works so don't know how to pick up the email details of messages that have been sent to me separately and where lovely people have offered help and advice.

Adult Aspergers Alison Kristian (14 Jan 2008 21:35) I run a small group for adults with AS ,friends and families. I agree that help is vertually non existant. I don't know if our group would be of any help, we meet and talk a lot, there is a lot of laughter and sometimes tears, the people who attend so far are mixed, people with or without diagnosis, partners, parents and friends. Please contact me if you think I can help. If it is not the right kind of group for Ray it may be that it can offer some support for you, Ray's Mum and Grandmother.
Kindest Regards Alison Kristian

Adult Aspergers Carole Paterson (3 Jul 2008 9:21) Hi Alison
Do you still run the group in the Rhyl Area. ? If so when does it run and where does it take place - I am interested in coming to see you and chat about my son David now nearly 18 who has had very little help and support with his AS.
Regards Carole Llangwyllog Anglesey
