lack of resources brenda (5 Dec 2002 20:38) Nice to have a website specifically for Wales, it would be nice to have the resources to accompany it. For example it would be nice to have an 'advocate' in every area who could help those newly diagnosed through the'maze'. Fortunately I was blessed with the Internet and cannot praise the National Autisitc Society enough, unfortunatley we do not all have this luxury.

Lack of resources Mark Smith (6 Dec 2002 8:19) Brenda - I agree - Autism Cymru have helped acheived a digital advocate through this resource - if such an advocate network exists or is planned to be created - I'm sure Autism Cymru would be happy to add their details to this site!

lack of resources sheena (30 Sep 2003 23:02) You would think that living in a small country such as Wales we would be able to unite and get the services we need, wouldn't you? Unfortunately we are too rural and don't seem to communicate with each other in different areas. Such a shame that we don't have Central conferences and meetings for exchange of ideas and learning from each other. Maybe we should all start local societies and have an annual conference? At one time I thought Connect A family would solve this 'isolation' problem, but it never happened, Mencap seems to be too broad for us, Nas Wales is doing what? Sorry we have this forum, but whatelse are they doing to get unity in services across Wales..? Guess the Audit inspectors were right - those who shout get the most- is that why my dd is the only one on ABA? Or that Social Services give me direct payments to buy the services she needs? Or that the Health Authority provided my AIT training course? or I can attend any course which I think might be useful to her therapy without any costs to myself? Do I shout? No I yell at the top of my lungs! Would I like all the parents of children with autism in Wales have the same services I do? YES. Is there anyone keep an eye on who is getting what? No

direct payments sheena (7 Nov 2003 10:32) NO, Direct payments is available to anyone on the disablity register, to purchase the care and services on their care-plan. My DD is only 10 and I have been receiving direct payments of £555.70p every four weeks for 18 months now. Out of the direct payments money, I buy respite care, when and where I want, I buy OT services private (NHS waiting list is TOO long), I buy services of a private play-based therapist, I buy in services of a private speech and language therapist, whatever dd requires which has been assessed in the care-plan can be bought with the money, and the best of all is DD doesn't need to wait for the NHS waiting list to get round to her, she gets what she wants instantly! E-mail me privately and I will send you the links for direct payments in return, all ring Mencap up for the CD-rom they have on direct-payments, you have to fight for it, but once you get it life gets easier!
